He kept me safe – a theatre play on the experiences of intimate partner violence as narrated by gay men

Matt, Will, and Ryan attend a group counselling session in which they disclose their experiences of unsettling acts at the hands of their boyfriends and partners. It has taken them a long time to recognise what has happened. Accompany these men while they take the first step identifying they are in a violent relationship and realising that it is not okay, so then they can seek help and support.

He kept me safe is a theatre play and seminar on intimate partner violence among gay men taking place on Thursday 22nd June at 16:00 hrs at the University of Edinburgh.

The play will be performed by professional actors representing the real-life experiences of intimate partner violence, as narrated by participants in the research interviews of the study ‘Experiences of Scottish men who have been subject to intimate partner violence in same-sex relationships’ by Dr Steven Maxwell, Dr Rosaleen O’Brien, and Dr Rosie Stenhouse, published in 2022.

The event will be of interest to those working in the fields of health policy, arts-informed methodologies, and mental health support services. During the event, we will share some insights on health policy research and narrative portraiture as a way for data analysis and research dissemination. The round table discussion will also provide an opportunity to explore how practitioners and services can best support those affected by these issues.
